Statesman Berrichons - "Reared on the Cotswold Hills"
The Statesman flock of British Berrichons was established in 2004 with the purchase of select
females and our first stock ram from some of the best flocks in the country (for further information on the history of our
flock see below).
The home of the
flock
The flock graze banks in
the heart of the Cotswold hills, overlooking the picturesque Windrush valley at approximately 800ft above sea level.
The land is organically managed which
comprises of permanent pastures and long term leys, making good use of clovers.
Flock management
The flock now consists of nearly 100 ewes, with the majority of which lamb outside in March/April with minimal interference.
However we do lamb a few ewes early for participation in our show team and to meet the demand of customers requiring ram lambs.
Our March/April born lambs are reared
naturally off grass with minimal use of concentrates. This allows us to produce shearling rams that have proved to us they
are capable of performing on this system, therefore they have the ability to pass this trait onto their offspring, which is
becoming more and more important to the commercial sheep farmer.
Through this system, our rams develop naturally so what our customers see is what our customers
get!!
''We
aim to breed quality, correct males and females for pedigree and commercial use - tough, hardy and prolific sheep that will
thrive on any system anywhere.''
The Statesman Flock of Berrichons was established
in 2004 with the purchase of ewes and ewe lambs from some of the best flocks in the UK. All the females had something in common
- they were all very correct, substantial and stretchy (I do like big ewes, you can't breed a Shire from a Shetland!).
The udder on a big ewe is high up, more accessible for lambs.
The stock ram was purchased from
Carlisle. NEWARK HENRY had already won Cumberland Show and he also won the show before the sale.
HENRY is very correct with terrific width of loin and very deep, wide gigots. He also has a smashing sharp
head with very white hair and all his attributes are passed on to his progeny.
HENRY
must have been the most consistent ram on the show circuit 2005-2006, winning twenty of his twenty three breed classes and coming
second in two. He won four Championships, three Reserve Championships, five Male Championships and three Reserve Male Championships.
He also featured in a very successful Group of Three winning at R.A.S.E. and R.W.A.S and Interbreed at Kenilworth.
The Statesman Flock has won the Reid Minty Shield (flock gaining most points on the show circuit)
in 2005, 2006 and 2008.
